Science Backs Meditation for Making Your Life Better

Are you skeptical about meditation or maybe think you don’t have time to incorporate it into your daily life?

Think Again…Research Suggests that if you aren’t meditating you’re short changing yourself. Before I get into some of the facts, I want to tell you how I came upon meditation and why I was compelled to begin.

I remember being a teenager in the 80’s and Mom had a book on meditation. Being the curious boy that I was, I decided to read a little of it…(that should have been the first sign of my Attention Deficit Disorder 😉 ) Anyway, I remember practicing what the book said, it was something like this:

The book suggested that I focus on a white light in my mind’s eye as well as my breathing. My overall focus was to remain mostly on my breathing and not try to control any thoughts that came. Just let them come…and let them go. I had a difficult time remaining focused for more than a few moments on my breathing…heck, I had difficulty focusing on much of anything for any length of time. So within a couple days I let it go.

Fast forward to college, I read another book on meditation and began my second encounter. The idea this time was to focus on counting my breaths…Inhale, 1, exhale. Inhale, 2, exhale, you get the drift. Same thing here, Somewhere around the 15 or 16 mark, my mind was off to the races and I’d forgot all about counting. It was frustrating because I wanted the rewards promised of meditation, but I just didn’t want to have to do all that “focusing”…

Maybe, like me, you’ve tried in the past and just couldn’t keep a routine…maybe you’ve never tried, and that’s okay too.

Well, just the other day, I happened to be visiting with a Psychiatrist friend of mine who graduated from Harvard. As we spoke about helping people discover their purpose in life and the impact of living life with purpose, I was introduced to Transcendental Meditation. Now, being the skeptical East Coaster that I am…I wanted facts…and I was in front of the right person to share them. A medical doctor from one of the most prestigious schools around and a psychiatrist to boot…the facts weren’t necessary, I was given results.

It doesn't matter the age and it helps lower blood pressure while the heart is under stress and while at rest. Regular TM practitioners develop a more resilient nervous system because they are less sensitive to stress. That fight or flight reaction is replaced with the ability to remain calm under pressure...and the cumulative affect means they live longer. See how people over 55, in a controlled experiment showed a decrease in mortality rate due to high blood pressure by practicing Transcendental Meditation.

With regular meditation of only 2 times a day, 20 minutes each, practitioners begin to find balance within their nervous systems, hormonal levels, and brain coherence. This results in reducing the effect on the body and mind in stressful situations. Imagine what it would feel like to experience deep relaxation and rest, no longer experiencing high stress, anxiety, or depression. Not reacting to that deeply ingrained fight or flight response and recovering quicker when you're faced with stressful situations. Even people experiencing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder have seen benefit from this type of meditation.

In conclusion, I am a life long researcher on the most effective and most efficient ways to find wellness and success in life. I was blown away by all the scientific research of Transcendental Meditation, as well as how easy it was to put to use. I hope you will consider doing a bit of digging for yourself, maybe finding a center that can teach you how to begin, (it takes 2-3 hours to learn and you're ready) and you can begin to see the major benefits from taking just a little bit of "me" time so you can be healthier, happier, and a more productive member of society.
